A college student returns with her father to his home country only to discover her family holds a dark secret that involves her.

After her grandmother dies of a heart attack, Jennifer accompanies her father and his girlfriend to Eastern Europe to attend the funeral and get in touch with her family roots. It doesn’t take long for her to discover a terrifying secret; the townsfolk serve flesh eating ghouls and the death of her grandmother has placed her directly in line to inherit her family’s most precious gift…the chance to be reincarnated as queen of the ghouls!

Before I go any further, lemme just warn you all, this is a Sci-Fi Original film so if you’re no fan of silly, cheesy B-movie junk packed with loads of CG and mediocre acting, you may want to just avoid this film altogether. For those of you, like me, that love Sci-Fi Original films, despite their varying degrees of ineptitude, Ghouls strangely satisfies.

The story wasn’t incredibly original but it was solid enough and the dialogue goes from being really really bad to really just okay but the real draw here is beauty and the beasts; the CG is sparse for a change and the seriously hot Kristen Renton is sure to mesmerize viewers were her large rack. Oh yeah, did I mention the eternally hot Erin Gray of Buck Rogers is in this? Not only do we get the beautiful Gray but William (Ghostbusters) Atherton also stars! Nice little lineup for a film most will probably end up ignoring which is a bit of a shame because this was actually better than one would expect.

When you talk about a flick called Ghouls, one fully expects to see Ghouls and I was pleasantly surprised to find the titular beasties in real deal latex! They occasionally burst into floating, black balls of CG mist but when they materialize to feed, zowie, they are gross, scary as nasty as shit! The only thing that could possibly make these monsters cooler would be meaty, gory carnage and, once again, the film delivers! What more must a film give you?!! Does it have to be a damn masterpiece?!!

If I could say one thing about Sci-Fi Originals that you simply cannot dispute it is this…Sci-Fi spares no expense on production design, costumes, score and CG. Even if the films are bad, they’re lightyears better than the majority of the indie horror stuff we see hit retail/rental shelves on a weekly basis from companies like Lionsgate, Sony and Dimension.

The film jumps back and forth between 20 years ago and the present.

The family includes domineering father Charles (Willem Dafoe), mother Lisa (Julia Roberts), son Michael ( young: Cayden Boyd; adult: Ryan Reynolds ), Michael's estranged wife Kelly Hanson (Carrie-Anne Moss), daughter Ryne (Shannon Lucio), Lisa's much younger sister Jane ( young: Hayden Panettiere; adult: Emily Watson ) and her husband Jimmy (George Newbern) and children Christopher (Chase Ellison) and Leslie (Brooklyn Proulx).

Charles and Michael have always had, and still have, a strained relationship with each other. For example, as a boy Michael claims he has lost his glasses while he has them in his pocket; even without knowing the latter, Charles, annoyed, has Michael get out of the car and makes him walk home in the rain. Charles imposes a long list of rules on Michael and also on Jane, staying with them. Jane hates these rules too. Michael embarrasses Charles in front of his colleagues by falsely claiming to have written a poem; he is punished by having to keep his arms horizontal while holding heavy objects, such that afterwards his arms hurt so much that he cannot even take food to his mouth; Jane feeds him. One time Charles and Lisa quarrel; in defense of Lisa, Michael attacks Charles such that the latter falls on the ground.

In the "present", Charles and Lisa go to a family reunion at Jane's house, which is Michael's childhood house, to celebrate Lisa's college graduation; Charles drives the car and is in a hurry. They collide with a tree in a manoeuvre to prevent a collision with Christopher, who crosses the road carelessly. Lisa, who did not have her seat-belts on, is killed and Charles is injured. Charles and Christopher both feel guilty.

Between the accident and the funeral Michael cheers up Christopher and Leslie by taking them out fishing, and exploding the fish with firecrackers, like he did with Jane in the past. He encourages the children to lie to their mother Jane about the trip. Charles and Jane consider Michael's behavior inappropriate. Also, after Kelly arrives, Michael has noisy sex just after the funeral, with the family and guests in the house hearing it.

Christopher, in an upset mood, runs away. Michael finds him and wants to take him home by car. Christopher insists that he wants to walk home alone. Michael gives him his cell phone in case he changes his mind, but after he leaves Christopher throws it away. He is missing for several hours, and Jane blames Michael for allowing him to walk home. He returns safely.

Michael discovers that Lisa was having an affair with her young professor Addison (Ioan Gruffudd), and had planned to break up with Charles after her graduation. Michael visits Addison; the latter apologizes, Michael says it is OK.

The film title refers to Michael having fun with Christopher and Leslie hitting fireflies in the garden with badminton rackets, in the dark.

After refreshing their memories of happy occasions by watching an old home movie, Charles and Michael reconcile. Michael destroys the manuscript of a book he had written about his childhood, which Charles and Jane were concerned about.

Rest Stop: Don't Look Back (2008) DIVX 1 Link Download.




One year after the disappearance of Jesse and Nicole, Jesse's brother Tom (a corporal in the Army, fresh on leave from Iraq) and two friends are on the trail. Although the police were unable to do anything, these three quickly stumble on the same path from a year before... encountering the religious family, the driver... and more. Will they meet the same fate? I really enjoyed "Rest Stop" and seeing that the same people -- most of the original cast (Jaime Alexander is noticeably absent), plus John Shiban and Shawn Papazian -- had returned, I figured this one couldn't be too bad. But my feelings are mixed. While some of it was pretty good, other aspects came across as lacking. I'll start with the defects and then go back to the merits.

The casting confused me. Both Tom Hilts (Richard Tillman) and his friend Jared (Graham Norris) weren't overly likable, and they came across as awkward. I had no interest in caring about them. The girlfriend (Jessie Ward) was good as far as being the "sexy chick", but beyond that had little to offer. Was I supposed to care about her? The other big concern was that while the creators had said they wanted to expand the mythology of the first film, almost every scene was covering the same territory all over again. It's true that new details about the driver emerged, and there was some added mythology, but not really enough to make this film seem progressive.

My final concern was the use of torture. I understand torture was used in the first film on the bus, but it seems like it was increased for this flick. For no particular reason. Having one character be turned on another? Excruciatingly painful incidents that do little or nothing in punishing sin, as near as I can tell. If you're going to use torture, use it sparingly. The torture meme has taken over horror and I have been sick of it for some time now... it's not scary, it's just getting played out and boring.

But the film is not without its merits. There's a great bathroom scene... an intense sex scene which could have gone further but goes pretty far as it is... and more of those creepy twins. The use of gritty filming (like in "Devil's Rejects") returns, which I think adds a lot of character (and should be used more, not less). And for those who liked the first film, this fills in some blanks that may have been lingering in the minds of viewers.

Overall, "Rest Stop: Don't Look Back" was not a necessary part of the series and could have gone without being made. I feel that for what was added, it wasn't nearly enough. At the same time, the film sets the stage for a "Rest Stop 3", since now there's bound to be questions needing answers for some people. I'm curious. I don't know if they can adequately answer my concerns about the plot, but they have my endorsement if they are willing to try. Just please... more plot, less torture.

Jennifer Marsh (Diane Lane) is a widowed single parent living in a suburban Portland home with her daughter Annie Haskins (Perla Haney-Jardine). By night, she works in the FBI's cybercrime division with Griffin Dowd (Colin Hanks), fighting identity theft and similar crimes. One night, an anonymous tip leads them to a website called killwithme.com. The site features a streaming video of a kitten being tortured and killed.

After the kitten's death, killwithme's webmaster (Joseph Cross) 'graduates' to human victims and makes their deaths correlate directly with the number of hits the site receives. At a press conference, the public is urged to avoid killwithme but, as Marsh feared, this only increases the site's popularity. The videos are recorded in the killer's basement and his various victims include a helicopter pilot (who is bled to death by injections of anticoagulant), a newscaster (burnt by heat lamps) and Dowd (killed by slowly increasing the concentration of sulfuric acid solution in which he is submerged).

At first it seems the victims were randomly chosen, but this is not the case. The first two victims were chosen because they were part of filming or presenting the suicide of a junior college teacher. The teacher's unstable, techno-prodigy son, Owen Reilly, broke down and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. When released, he decided to prove a point (that the public is insatiable for the suffering of others), as well as wreak vengeance on those he felt had exploited his father's tragedy. Dowd was killed because he came close to the truth of who the murderer was. Marsh, who figures this out, is soon targeted as well.

Captured by Reilly, Marsh escapes her death-by-mulcher by swinging out of the way while dangling from the ceiling. She ends up breaking free and gunning down the murderer just as the other police show up, Marsh kills Reilly on his own website. As the film ends, the website receives numerous requests for a video of Reilly's death.

As my folks both worked in mental health care facilities, this movie reminded me of visits to their workplace. The audience at my screening were very quiet, yes I know it is a drama, but some aspects of Charlie behavior and reactions of others is quite funny. I felt guilty laughing in some scenes, hopefully it is not a sign of underlying mental issues!

It does make you feel for those who care and live with people with special needs. A movie such as should be a real wake up call, love your family, it's the only one you have got.

A good movie overall.

In 1947 Jack Parsons and L. Ron Hubbard were performing Crowley's mystic rituals in a house in Pasadena, California. Parsons wrote excitedly to his occult leader, Crowley.

First instructions were received through Lafayette Ron Hubbard the seer. I have followed them to the letter. There was a desire for incarnation. Crowley wrote despairingly to a disciple about Parsons:

It appears that he has given away both his girl and his money to this writer of science fiction and is now invoking the ritual to produce a MOONCHILD. I am fairly frantic...'

Nine months later while being visited by two students from Cambridge, Crowley died of cardiac degeneration. Missing from his personal possessions was his pocket-watch. His funeral took place in the Chapel of the Brighton Crematorium. The final rites were performed by the novelist Louis Marlowe reading extracts from Crowley's 'Book of the Law'. The Brighton Echo denounced the whole ceremony as a Black Mass. In 1952 Jack Parsons was blown up in his laboratory in Pasadena. L. Ron Hubbard died on his yacht as leader of the controversial Church of Scientology.

But did the issue end with these three deaths? Would Crowley, as he claimed, ever return from death to rule the world? Why did US astronauts name a crater on the moon after Jack Parsons? Is L. Billy Connolly Live in New York (2005)



No one could argue that Billy Connolly has had a good career in regards to his stand up comedy career. It's just a pity that this DVD could well be his last. Recorded in the unfamiliar setting of a New York Theatre we watch Billy Connolly engage with his New York audience. We observe 90 minutes of old and new material some of it taken from his Live 1994 DVD. To be honest the performance is half hearted and only rarely attains glimpses of a comic genius working. I don't think it's got anything to do with material being unfunny but the energy levels normally associated with a Billy Connolly Stand up gig aren't there and we get the feeling that Billy Connolly is like every other person in their 60's feeling their age.

The crowd do not help matters. They are boisterous and noisy during the performance and Connolly appears to be having a really bad night with keeping his audiences attention. It does not help that right on at the beginning when he is just settling into the performance he is interrupted by latecomers to his show. At one stage this happening would have been the start to a great night. But instead of putting them down in his traditional way Connolly reverts to a skit about the theater being built on a Native American trail and that's why people are walking all over the place. It doesn't go anywhere. At times he makes a breakthrough particularly during the last story but it is sadly a case of too little too late. He has one great story about a party his roadies had on tour but it is really filled with ideas that amount to nothing.

They say comedians lose their edge when success comes their way and that is why many of them move into film and television and some would apply this to Connolly. But to be fair Connolly has proved them wrong with many of his tours and it is just a pity that this show was recorded in the aftermath of his hasty retreat back to the states after some unsavory comments about the late Ken Bigley. Maybe his confidence has taken a severe battering on account of this. This could well explain his decision to record the concert in New York and not in his native U.K. homeland. I need not remind fans of the outrage caused by his Bigley comments. So recording in an environment that is a first and looks to be boisterous and hostile probably prevented him in presenting his best performance. Or maybe he really is feeling his age. All in all not what I expected from my favorite comedian but has a few skits to entertain but not enough to hold my attention long enough. A disappointing 3 out of 10.
